FINAL PROJECT SUMMARY TECHNOLOGY IN THE CURRICULUM Amy Vieregge CRIME AND PUNISHMENT LESSON PLAN GOAL The goal of this unit is to give the secondary special education students an awareness of the world around them through the study of crimes and their respective punishments in different countries. OBJECTIVES The students will use the Illinois webquest to find answers to questions about crimes and their punishments in Illinois. The students will use the computer to check for results of our surveys through e- mail. The students will develop some basic skills to tabulate their results on a spreadsheet. The students will use a word processor to write a short report of their findings from other countries. The students will give a short oral report to the class from their written report. The students will e-mail students throughout the year and develop a relationship and continue to learn more about the country. TIMELINE DAY 1 The students will be introduced to the unit on Crime and Punishment. They will be told what is planned and expected of them. They will be reviewed on computer basics, e-mail and internet. They will be assigned a keypal/country for them to get the information on the crimes we have selected and their punishments. If we have received e-mail with the results of the survey, each student will be assigned a country/keypal to correspond with and to get the information from so that it can be tabulated into our spreadsheet. The students will be taught about a webquest. They will be reviewed on the basics of word processing and taught a little about spreadsheets. They will be given some guidelines about what they will be doing with their keypals and what they should be trying to find out. DAY 2, 3, 4 The students will start with doing the webquest on Illinois. They will go through it and find the answers to the questions about crimes and their punishments in Illinois. They will learn to open a word processor and type their answers as they go through the webquest and toggle back and forth between the webquest and the word processor. DAY 5, 6 The students will begin to tabulate their results in a spreadsheet. They will do this as a group since the classes are small. Each student will enter the information they have found from the results of the surveys we have posted on the internet. Each student will be responsible for a different country and they will take turns entering the results. DAY 7, 8 The students using their webquest answers, their spreadsheet, and any other information they have received from e-mail correspondence will begin typing a report in a word processor. They will use spell checker and print out their documents. DAY 9, 10 The students will give a short oral report on their country to the rest of the class. As the students give their reports we will put up a chart on the board to compare the punishments of different countries. EVALUATION The students will be evaluated on their answers to the webquest. They will be graded on their written reports about the country from which they have received information. They will be given a grade on their oral reports to the class. The students will be given a short quiz on Illinois laws regarding crime and punishment.
