CAREER QUEST Mary Fulton Lesson Plan PURPOSE - Using an interest survey, students will focus on three career possibilities; then using internet and other programs, they will research those careers. OBJECTIVES - Students will select three possible careers to research Students will collect various information about the three careers Students will discuss with class members their findings Students will make a presentation to the class on the careers they have researched TECHNOLOGY - The introduction to this unit will be made using Power Point. Students will use an interest survey program, Horizons, to determine possible career choices. Research on these careers will be made using the Horizons program and the Internet. SCHEDULE - DAY 1 - Begin unit with Power Point Presentation. DAY 2 - Students will take interest survey (Horizons Program). From the results, they will select three careers of interest. (One may be their choice, not necessarily on list.) DAYS 3 & 4 - Using the Horizon Program, students will investigate their careers. Information collected will be presented to the class. Information to be included: 1. Overview of career 2. Aptitude necessary in this career 3. Physical demands 4. Work environment (Physical & Human) 5. Salary - beginning, average, benefits 6. Education necessary 7. Growth potential for this career 8. Related occupations 9. Other sources of career information in this field 10. Any other information of interest DAYS 5 & 6 - Continue researching careers using “Career Quest” homepage, first using sites of top three buttons, then using search engine buttons. DAY 7 - Group students according to general career fields selected (i.e. medical, education, etc.) Students are to discuss and share information they have found. DAY 8 & 9 - Students to present to the class information about the careers they researched and indicate which of the careers they are most interested in and why. TIME LINE - To be presented fall, 1997. (Teaching assignment for 1997-98 school year not yet final so timing depends on course(s) being taught.) EVALUATION FORMAT - Students will be evaluated on their diligence in researching career information and on their class presentations. After further discussion of resumes and interviewing, a written test will also be given.
