Ancient Egypt Webquest

Introduction:

Egypt is located on the continent of Africa along the Nile River. The civilization of ancient Egypt, together with Mesopotamia, India, and China, was one of the earliest civilizations in the world.

With your partner you need to read all of the text in the first seven sites. After you finish that you will then go to your research topic.

The first site that you will visit shows a map of Egypt. Find the cities of Memphis, Cairo, Aswan, Alexandria, and Giza. Click on FOCUS on EGYPT - Map. To find out about the Egyptian family life, marriage, cooking, clothing, housing, and entertainment click on Egypt: Daily Life . There was three important time periods called dynasties. The Old Kingdom was from 2660-2180 B.C. Click on each subtopic of pyramids, Memphis, and papyrus. The Middle Kingdom was from 2080-1640 B.C. The New Kingdom was from 1570-1075 B.C. Click on the subtopics of tombs, temples, mummies, Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and Life in Ancient Egypt. The next site you will visit is The Curse Of The Pharaohs: You are Lost in a tomb! Can you find your way out? The very last item that you need to visit is for you to take a EgyptQuiz. Find out what you have learned.


The Task:

1. You are now ready to begin your research topic. Scroll down the bar until you find the research topic that you have been assigned. Divide up the task with your partner.

2. Read all the information under that topic.

3. Press File and then print if you want to print any of the articles.

4. When you have finished looking at each site under your topic, you then need to go to the World Book or card catalog to see if there is any other information that you will need to add to your paper.

5. Your research paper needs to be 2 pages long. You both will present your research to the class. Decide how you will divide up the material you will present.

2. When you finish your research topic, and if you have time you can go into the search engines to find more information or look at the other research topics listed.


Research Topics:

Imhotep

Imhotep was the chief engineer of King Zoser. To see a picture of the step pyramid click onTLI_arch.html. This architect, Imhotep , was the chief visier during the Third Dynasty and built the first step pyramid or mastaba. The Architect Imhotep built a six-tiered pyramid that was 197 feet high and located South of Cairo.

Click on Egyptian Art to see examples of egyptian art on papyrus. papyrus.html will show you what kind of medical information was put on papyrus . The Introduction to the Collection: Papyrus will tell you how to make your own papyrus scroll. Writing in Egypt under Greek and Roman Rule shows the different types of papyrus. From the World of the Papyri you will find out what the word papyrus means.

Ramses II

Ramses II was the pharoah who drove Moses out of Egypt. In The Great Temple of Abu Simbel: Map you will find the general layout of his temple. Click on The Great Temple of Abu Simbel to see a statue of RamsesII wife, sons and daughters at his feet. The Palace of Rameses III andBalliver's Travels: Egypt/Ramses II
will show you oictures of the temple Abu Simbel. Ramses II - Pharaoh of Egypt
was the son of Seti I. Ramses II ruled for 67 years.

Mythology is the study of Ancient Gods. The Directory of Ancient Egyptian Gods
will give you a list of the Egyptian Gods in alphabetical order. To find out about the gods of Amen, Osiris, and Cippi, click on Amen and Amen-Ra then Egypt: Gods - Osiris, Asar and finally Egypt: Gods - Cippi of Horus . Sphinx

Nefertiti

Pyramid

The Pyramids at Giza will give you information as to when the pyramids were built. Pyramid building stopped during the New Kingdom and 03: Pyramids' Final Fates will explain why. Mummies

King Tut

Before Tutankhamun's tomb was discovered, he was a little known figure. Click on tut page to find out about the discovery. Scroll down in Famous Pharaohs to see that Tutankhamun was a son-in-law of Akhenton. To see the gold mask of Tutankhamun click on Egyptian Museum - Culturenet . Click on Part One: The death of Pharaoh to see what the scientists think caused Tutankhamun's death. Tutankhaten became pharoah at the age of 9.

Cleopatra

Khufu

Khufu had the Great Pyramid built during his rule. This pyramid is located in Giza . This next site has hieroglyphics showing that Khufu had the pyramids built. Some scientists believe that Khufu was also known as Joseph. Click on Joseph and Khufu to see if you agree.
